What is Altitude Training?
Altitude training, also known as hypoxic training, involves exercising in, living in, or otherwise breathing oxygen reduced air for the purpose of improving athletic performance, pre-acclimatizing to altitude, metabolising fat and/or increasing physical wellness.
When the human body is exposed to hypoxia (oxygen reduced environments), it struggles to produce the required amounts of energy with less available oxygen. This struggle triggers the onset of a range of physiological adaptations geared towards enhancing the efficiency of the body’s respiratory, cardiovascular and oxygen utilization systems.
Training at altitude has been used to improve athletic performance for decades. Since the Mexico Olympic Games, when the effects of altitude on performance were first made obvious, many teams and individuals use altitude training as part of their preparation.
Altitude training improves a number of important parameters of performance. Recent research conducted on elite cyclists using Simulated Altitude Training systems, like APC’s Altitude Chamber in our Yarraville facility, has shown improved performance at sea level following a block of altitude exposure and training at altitude. Fixed Other studies demonstrate positive effects such as improved repeat sprint performance, increased anabolic hormonal responses and increased red blood cell mass. Altitude training isn’t just for athletes - fitness enthusiasts and beginners to fitness can all take advantage of the benefits associated with altitude training without having to go further than Yarraville.
Training at altitude has scientifically proven to trigger a range of physiological responses not achievable in normal training programs. These physiological adaptions include enhanced fat metabolism, boosted production of red blood cells and capillaries and a strengthened immune system, and can lead to significant improvements in performance, health and fitness. Several studies on athletes have shown results including:
- Up to 37% more endurance (exercise-till-exhaustion).
- Up to 25% more efficient workout than at sea-level.
- Up to 15% more weight loss.
- Up to 9% more strength.
- Up to 3% more power and speed.
The most significant results in performance come from properly integrated altitude training programs, with individual monitoring and progression assessments. At APC we have the experience and knowledge to assist any individual to achieve the best possible results from altitude training.
At APC we want everyone, with a range of fitness levels, to be able to access the altitude training everyday and experience training at altitude without the expense and time required to travel to real altitude. We help our clients reach their optimal performance potential.
No matter what your ability level or goal is, we have an altitude training solution to take your performance to the next level. Get in touch with us today to explore your options.
